Tournament Bracket
INDIANAPOLIS – The bracket is now set for this weekend's Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, held Nov. 16-18, and hosted by the league office at the Indiana South Sports Academy in Indianapolis, Ind. The top eight teams will compete to become the 2012 GLVC Champion and earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Championship tournament.
The top-three teams from the East and West Division and two wild cards make up the eight-team field. The single-elimination tournament consists of four first-round matches on Friday, followed by two semifinal games on Saturday evening, and the championship match on Sunday afternoon.
Indianapolis (26-6, 15-3 GLVC), the co-East Division Champion, earns the East's No. 1 seed over Lewis by way of a head-to-head set record tiebreak. The Greyhounds will play No. 4 UW-Parkside (21-9, 10-8), which earned one of the wildcards and was moved to the West since it was the fifth-best team in the East. The two teams split regular season competition in head-to-head play, as both teams defended their home court. UIndy defeated the Rangers, 3-0 on Sept. 14, while the Rangers won in a five-set thriller 3-2 on Nov. 3.
Missouri S&T (19-12, 15-3), the outright West Division champs, merits the No. 1 seed in the West and will play the East's No. 4 seed Southern Indiana (16-15, 12-6). This will be the first time the two will play each other this season.
Rockhurst (25-6, 14-4) owns the No. 2 seed in the West and will play the East's No. 3 seed Bellarmine (18-7, 13-5) for the first time this season. The Hawks enters the tournament on a seven-game win streak, while the Knights have won their last three matches in three sets.
Lewis (24-9, 15-3), the East Division co-champs, earns the East's No. 2 seed and will play No. 3 Missouri-St. Louis (13-17, 10-8) from the West in the final round of Friday's action. This will be the first matchup between the two teams this season, and the first since the Flyers blanked the Tritons 3-0 back on Oct. 2, 2011. Lewis has won 12 of their last 15 matches played since the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament, and enters the tournament on a seven-game win streak.
Friday's winners will move on to the semifinal round and will play Saturday at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. ET. The Championship game will be played on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Last year, Indianapolis claimed its fourth-ever GLVC Championship with a 3-2 thriller over second-seeded Lewis. The Greyhounds outlasted the Flyers by scores of 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, 18-25 and 23-21. Lewis leads the current conference contingent with eight titles, followed by UIndy's four and Southern Indiana with one.
