Miners land 10 on All-GLVC first team, 19 on all-league squad

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's most successful football season in 30 years has led to 19 players landing on the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference's all-league team for the recently completed 2012 season, one that saw the Miners tie their school record for victories in a season.

Of the 19 selections to the All-GLVC squad, 10 were named to the first team and six of them came from the Miners' record-setting offensive unit.  An additional four players were chosen to the second team and five more were named honorable mention.

The Miner offense broke the school's single-season scoring record this year with 458 points, largely due to the work of the six first-team selections.  Wide receiver Smook Thomas (Quincy, Fla./East Gadsden) tied for the conference lead with 92 receptions for 861 yards and six touchdowns, while fellow wideout Joseph Hyman (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades) had 41 catches for 632 yards and 15 touchdown receptions, the second-highest total in the GLVC.

Curterris Golden (Chicago, Ill./John Hope) led the Miners' rushing attack with 844 yards – the most by a Miner since 2005 -- and also broke the S&T single-season mark for rushing touchdowns with 14 on the year .  Much of Golden's success can also be traced to the work of the offensive line, which had two first-team selections in center Pat Lang (Pago Pago, Am. Samoa/Leone) and tackle Matt Mast (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) and second-team picks Forrestal Hickman (Holton, Kan./Holton HS) and Michael Underbrink (Richardson, Texas/Berkner), as well as H-back Ian Kreher (Warrensburg, Mo./Warrensburg) , who was chosen to the first team at his position.

The S&T offense averaged 439.6 yards per game, including 174.7 per game on the ground, during the 2012 season.

The first-team selections on defense included defensive tackle Eddie Rascon (Canutillo, Texas/Canutillo), who led the GLVC with 13 quarterback sacks on the year and recorded 44 tackles overall along with fellow first-team linebacker Chris Horn (Tulsa, Okla./Booker T. Washington), who also finished the season with three interceptions.

Two members of the Miner secondary were also named to the first team – cornerback Naeem Forrester (Los Angeles, Calif./Venice), the S&T interception leader with four and pass breakups with six and safety Billy Foster (Antioch, Calif./Deer Valley), who recorded 26 tackles, four pass breakups and three interceptions.

Another member of the defense, lineman Freddy Dugard (Queens Village, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) – who was second in the conference in sacks with 11 – joined Hickman, Underbrink and kick returner Carlton Westbrook (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) on the second team.  Dugard had 44 tackles overall on the season to tie Rascon and Horn for second on the team, while Westbrook was one of the GLVC's most dangerous kick returners, averaging 19 yards per kickoff return and 21.5 yards per punt runback, including two brought back for touchdowns to tie an S&T single-season mark.

The honorable mention picks included quarterback Josh Firm (Lancaster, Calif./Quartz Hill), who completed 66.6 percent of his passes for 2,468 yards and 27 touchdowns; linebacker Chris Emesih (Houston, Texas/Westfield), who led the Miners with 68 tackles, linebacker Jordan Pulou (Magna, Utah/Cyprus), who made 32 stops on the year; and defensive linemen Jimmy Barnhart (Union, Mo./Union) and Josip Juric (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling HS) from a unit that set a school record with 45 quarterback sacks.

Barnhart had seven of the sacks as part of his 27 tackles, while Juric was in on 37 tackles and made four for a loss.

Missouri S&T finished the 2012 season with a record of 10-1 and finished second to Indianapolis – who had 14 All-GLVC selections and picked up three of the league's major awards – in the conference race with a 7-1 mark.  The Miners were ranked No. 19 in Monday's American Football Coaches Association Division II poll.
