On Friday, S&T got off to a slow start as it trailed the Screaming Eagles (16-16) 7-4 in the early goings. The Miners responded by scoring six of the next seven points to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish. S&T held a pair of one-point leads before eventually beginning to pull away. The Miners led 20-15, but had to weather a rally by Southern Indiana as it closed to within 21-18. S&T finished the set out strong scoring the last four points to take the opener 25-18. The Miners had 14 kills in the stanza and hit .186 percent. They were led by Krista Haslag (Linn, Mo./Helias ) with five kills while Hayley Wright (Omaha, Neb./Millard West), Julie Meyer (Marthasville, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) and Kelly Kosmopolis (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) had three kills apiece. The third set was a see-saw affair with 10 ties and seven lead changes along the way. The Miners led 5-3, but saw USI score five straight to take an 8-5 lead. S&T continued to hold the lead until 12-10 when the Screaming Eagles ran off six of the next seven points to move in front 16-13. Their lead eventually grew to 19-15, but the Miners answered with a 6-1 run to take a 21-20 advantage. The two sides traded points and USI had a chance to win the set leading 24-23, but Meyer knocked down a kill to the set at 24-all.
