Miners' Westbrook selected to Daktronics All-Region squad

11/29/2012 3:40:00 PM

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T senior wide receiver Carlton Westbrook (Centralia, Ill./Centralia) was selected today to the Daktronics all-region team for Super Region 4 for the recently completed 2012 season.  Westbrook was a second-team selection to the squad.

One of the top kick returners in the region during the past year, Westbrook tied a Missouri S&T school record with two punt returns for touchdowns.  Westbrook brought a punt back 58 yards in the season opener against Oklahoma Panhandle State and added a 74-yard return for a score three weeks later against Kentucky Wesleyan.

During the year, he averaged 21.5 yards per punt return and 19 yards per kickoff return, giving him an average of nearly 20 yards on all kick returns this season.  However, because he had only 11 punt returns for the season, he fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Division II rankings in that category as players must return at least 1.1 kicks per game to be eligible.  Westbrook was ranked among the national punt return leaders for a good portion of the 2012 season.

Westbrook was one of four players from the Great Lakes Valley Conference named to the all-region squad.  Indianapolis wide receiver Mar'Quone Edmonds and Central State linebacker Darius Wilson were named to the first team, while Indianapolis running back Klay Fiechter was chosen to the second team.

West Texas A&M and Colorado State-Pueblo – who face off Saturday in a national quarterfinal matchup – had the most selections on the team with seven and six, respectively.

Missouri S&T finished the 2012 season with a 10-1 record and in second place in the inaugural season of GLVC play.  The Miners were ranked 19th in the most recent American Football Coaches Association rankings conducted at the conclusion of the regular season.

The team, which is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems, is voted on by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
