ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T senior offensive lineman
Brian Peterson (Jacksonville, Ill./Jacksonville), who last month was named as an academic all-district selection, can now add another major award to his mantle as he was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America football team for NCAA Division II the 2012 season.
Peterson, a chemical engineering major at MissourI S&T, was a first-team selection to the squad and started along the offensive line this season for a unit that was one of most productive in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and NCAA Division II. As a team, the Miners ranked in the top three in the GLVC in most of the offensive categories, including setting a school record with 458 points scored (41.6 points per game) and ranking second in total offense with 439.2 yards per contest.
S&T finished second in the GLVC in passing offense and fourth in rushing offense during the year on a unit that included the conference's second-leading receiver, third-leading rusher and a quarterback that finished third in the conference in passing yards. The offensive line allowed only 13 sacks in 11 games during the year.
Peterson is the 19th member of the Miner football program to garner Academic All-America honors and first since 2010 when Chad Shockley was a first-team selection at wide receiver. He is the 43
rd Missouri S&T student-athlete to be named Academic All-America since 2000, the fifth-most of any institution in NCAA Division II since 2000.
Missouri S&T has had 67 Academic All-America selections in the history of the program. The team is selected by the sports information directors in NCAA Division II.
Missouri S&T finished the season at 10-1 was ranked 19
th in the American Football Coaches Association rankings following the regular season. The Miners finished second in the GLVC to NCAA playoff qualifier Indianapolis in the inaugural season of GLVC play.
