For two months the Missouri S&T volleyball team has spent more time on the road than it has at home. It will continue for one more weekend as the Miners close out the road portion of their 2013 regular season schedule with matches at Illinois Springfield and McKendree.
S&T (12-12, 7-4 GLVC) can strengthen its chances to make the GLVC Tournament with a good showing this weekend. The Miners are currently third in the GLVC's West Division ahead of Missouri-St. Louis by a match and Drury by two matches. The top three teams in each division are guaranteed spots in the conference tournament with the last two spots going to the teams with the next best records.
S&T is looking to rebound from a tough weekend at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover dropping all three of its matches. The Miners have had success against Illinois Springfield winning six of the seven meetings all-time between the two schools.
The Prairie Stars (6-16, 2-9 GLVC) enter play this weekend having dropped four of its last six overall and seven straight conference matches. At the Crossover last weekend they went 1-2 falling to Tiffin in straight sets and Michigan Tech in four sets. UIS's lone win came against Lake Erie College in straight sets.
The Prairie Stars have an attack percentage of .167 (922k/468e/2718ta) while its opponents are hitting .228 (1040k/405e/2786ta). UIS is averaging 11.4 kills per sets and is led by Sara Baker with 211 kills. Kellee Mahaffay, Shelby Geers and Ashley Beaton have 167, 131 and 130 kills respectively. JoAnna Hoffman is the primary setter averaging 8.51 assists per set while Kayla Katarzynski has dug up 312 balls of the floor.
McKendree heads into Saturday's match against Drury with an 8-16 mark, 3-8 in the GLVC. Last weekend the Bearcats won two of its three matches at the Crossover sweeping past Malone and Walsh sandwiched around a five set loss to Findlay.
As a team McKendree is hitting .127 percent for the season while holding their opponents to just .168. The Bearcats are averaging 11.5 kills per set and led by Bailey Kampwerth with 117 kills while Hannah Wessel has contributed 106 kills to the attack. Rebecca Nauman, Breanna Howe and Aubrey Dickmann have split time as the setters averaging 5.12, 4.12 and 3.38 assists/set respectively while Maddie Kelly is averaging 5.48 digs/set.
This will be just the second meeting all-time between the Miners and Bearcats with S&T winning the first match-up two years ago in Rolla by the score of 3-1.
