ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Former Missouri S&T track & field standout Tyrone Smith, a two-time member of Bermuda's Olympic team and three-time All-America performer in the long jump, was inducted Tuesday night as one of six new members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Hall of Fame class for 2014.

Smith is the second student-athlete in as many years from Missouri S&T to earn a spot in the conference's Hall of Fame, joining former softball All-America selection Kandi Weiberg Spraggs who was a member of the 2013 induction class.

As a student-athlete at Missouri S&T, Smith was a three-time all-GLVC honoree and five-time champion in the jumping events, excelling in the long jump where he won the league's indoor titles in 2006 and 2007 as well as the 2006 outdoor championship. He also captured a pair of indoor triple jump championships and was named in 2006 as the GLVC's "Athlete of the Year" at the indoor championships after winning the two jumping titles and finishing third in the 55-meter dash.

In addition to his performances at the conference level, Smith was twice the national runner-up in the long jump at the NCAA Division II Championships, reaching that mark at the 2006 outdoor championships and again at the 2007 indoor nationals. In addition, Smith had a fourth place finish in the event at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Smith is the current school record holder at Missouri S&T in both the indoor and outdoor long jump.

Following his career at Missouri S&T, Smith moved to Houston, Texas and began competing on the international circuit. He earned a berth to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China, competing for his native country of Bermuda and recorded a top mark of 7.91 meters (25-11 1/2), which was just three centimeters shy of landing a berth in the finals of the event.

Four years later in London, Smith qualified for the medal round with a seasonal-best jump of 7.97 meters (26-1¾) in the preliminaries, then finished in 12th place in the finals the following day.

Smith was born in Bermuda and moved to the United States at age six, spending most of his youth growing up in North Chicago, Ill. He is the national record holder in Bermuda in the long jump, setting the mark of 8.22 meters (26-11¾ inches) in the process of winning the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2010 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, in 2010. He also won the long jump at the Central American and Caribbean Championships in 2011.

During the 2013 season, Smith competed at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia, where he finished in 13th place in the overall competition.

Smith was be inducted into the Hall of Fame along with former Northern Kentucky University women's basketball coach Nancy Winstel, women's basketball standouts Jessica Stuckman (Quincy) and Molly Carter-Miller (Drury) and women's soccer players Stef Strauss-Thompkins (Wisconsin-Parkside) and Camie Bechtold (Quincy).
