Miners get four top-three finishes, remain second at NSISC's midway point

Thursday's NSISC Results/Team Scores through 16 events

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Missouri S&T had two second place finishes as well as two third place efforts Thursday evening as it remained in second place in a tight battle with Delta State at the top of the standings following day two of the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Championships.

The Miners trail Delta State by just six and one-half points at the midway point of the meet, as the two teams have moved well ahead of third place Henderson State in the team standings.  The Miners, who have accumulated 346.5 points thus far, are over 100 points ahead of the Reddies.

One of the runner-up finishes for the Miners came from their 200-yard freestyle relay team of Danylo Mykhailov (Khankiv, Ukraine/Sport Collegue N.S.), Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) and Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School), as that quartet finished in a time of 1:22.09.

S&T's individual highest finish Thursday was also a second place showing which came from Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic) in the 200-yard individual medley, as he recorded a time of 1:53.57.  Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) took third in that event as well in 1:53.89, while Matt Welsh (Wildwood, Mo./Lafayette) finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:35.47

Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) was fifth in the 500-freestyle in 4:38.51 as was Dole in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.81 seconds.  Mykhailov ended up in a tie for sixth in the 50-freestyle in 20.92 seconds.  Alfredo Martinez (Mexico City, Mexico/Instituto Cumbres San Javier) took eighth in the 500-freestyle in 4:41.66 as did Sponsler in the 50-freestyle in 21.30 seconds.

Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) won the consolation final in the 200-IM in 1:53.27 and Norris did likewise in the 50-free in 21.02 seconds, while S&T also got scoring performances in the consolation finals from Sasha Stadnik (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West), Chris Stockmann (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) and Ryan Gibson (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) in the 500-freestyle, Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) and Andrew Simek (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) in the 200-IM and Matt Zieger (St. Joseph, Mo./Central) in the 50-free.

Missouri S&T also finished second in the consolation final of the 200-freestyle relay, with the team of Zieger, Luis Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R./Colegio Amador), Layne and Kerc finishing in 1:24.61.

The meet continues through Saturday.
