Miners sweep 400-IM spots, remain on Delta's heels at NSISC meet

Friday's NSISC Results/Team Scores through 30 events

CLEVELAND, Miss. – Missouri S&T remains in a nip-and-tuck battle with Delta State for the lead at the New South Intercollegiate Swimming Championships, with the Miners trailing by just six and one-half points heading into the final day of competition.

Delta State has 615 points to S&T's 608.5 through Friday's events as the two have distanced themselves from the rest of the field.  The Miners are seeking their seventh straight championship in this meet in their last year before the Great Lakes Valley Conference begins sponsoring a championship meet next February.

S&T got its first event win on Friday in the very first event as it swept the top three spots in the 400-yard individual medley.  Ethan Goldfarb (Arlington, Texas/The Oakridge School) won the race in a time of 3:57.34, while Ryan Layne (Houston, Texas/Cypress Creek) placed second in 4:00.29 and Nate Kamrath (Newburgh, Ind./Castle) third in 4:03 flat.

The Miners were also second and third in the 200-yard freestyle, as Luke Norris (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) had a time of 1:40.19 to take second and Keith Sponsler (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln East) was third in 1:40.62.  Aljaz Kerc (Ljubljana, Slovenia/Gimnazija Bezigrad) also had a second place finish for S&T Friday in the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.29 seconds.

S&T's 400-yard medley relay team of Andrew Schranck (Alton, Ill./Marquette Catholic), Goldfarb, Danylo Mykhailov (Khankiv, Ukraine/Sport Collegue N.S.) and Jacob Dole (Corbin, Ky./Country Day School) finished third in a tight race in that, which Delta State won by just over a second and by 2.5 over the Miners.  Schranck finished fourth in the 100-yard butterfly in 49.37 seconds, while Drew Larkins (Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) was fifth in the 100-breaststroke in 57.35 seconds.

Mykhailov was sixth in the 100-yard backstroke in 51.66 seconds and seventh in the 100-butterfly in 50.74, while Sasha Stadnik (Overland Park, Kan./Blue Valley West) was eighth in the 200-free in 1:43.39 as was Andrew Simek (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) in the 100-breaststroke in 58.75 seconds.

The Miners also had a winning performance from Luis Nesrala (Santo Domingo, D.R./Colegio Amador) in the consolation final of the 100-backstroke in a time of 51.81 seconds and from its 400-medley relay team of Kamrath, Larkins, Ryan Gibson (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) and Norris in that consolation final.  In addition, S&T had scoring performances in the consolation finals from Gibson in the 100-butterfly as well as  Matt Zieger (St. Joseph, Mo./Central) and Chris Stockmann (Beaumont, Texas/West Brook) in the 200-freestyle.

The meet concludes Saturday night.
