ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T has added two assistant football coaches for the 2013 season, as
Michael Burton and Kyle Shoemaker will join the Miner staff.
Burton, a former quarterback at Missouri Western State University, will serve as the Miners' running backs coach. He spent the last six seasons at Missouri Western working with the running backs during that period of time for an offensive unit that was headed by new S&T head coach
Tyler Fenwick. He worked with Harlon Hill Award finalist Michael Hill over the last two seasons, a player who rushed for 2,168 yards and 16 touchdowns during the 2012 season and for a school record 3,473 yards during his two seasons at Missouri Western to earn All-America honors.
As a player for the Griffons from 2003-06, Burton threw 3,151 yards passing and 10 touchdowns.
“I am excited to add Mike Burton to our staff. He is very knowledgeable with our offense and will help the process of installing the new offense,” Fenwick said. “He is a very good teacher and relates to the players in a great way.”
Shoemaker comes to Missouri S&T from Azuza Pacific University in California, where he coached the team's hybrid linebackers, handled all of the team's video productions and served as recruiting coordinator during the 2012 season. Prior to that, he spent three years as a student assistant at Cal Polytechnic State University, working on both sides of the ball and handing the video coordination. He will work with the Miner secondary in the upcoming year.
“Kyle's knowledge of the defensive system will add great experience to the back end of our defense,” Fenwick said. “He is very organized and energetic about the game of football. I think he will be a great addition to our staff.”
Shoemaker is originally from Solano Beach, Calif., where he was a three-year starter at linebacker at Santa Fe Christian High School. He was a two-time All-Coastal League selection for his play and finished second on the team in tackles (94) for the Eagles in 2005 as they advanced to the California Interscholastic Federation championship game. He had 84 tackles as a 2004 junior when Santa Fe Christian won the CIF crown and also lettered in volleyball for the Eagles.
He earned his bachelor's degree in business from Cal Poly in 2010 and received his master's degree in organizational leadership at Azuza Pacific in December 2012.
