(Somers, Wis.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners battled to
0-0 tie against Quincy, but advanced to the GLVC Championship by defeating the Hawks 4-3 in a penalty shootout at Wood Road Field in Somers, Wis. It marks the first time that a women's team at S&T will play for a GLVC championship.
S&T will seek that championship Sunday when it faces tournament host Wisconsin-Parkside in a noon kickoff. The Rangers, ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA poll, topped Truman State 2-0 in Friday's second semifinal contest to advance to the title game for the second year in succession.
The opening half was primarily played in though midfield, though both sides did have some good buildups but weren't able to get much going to goal. Quincy (8-8-4) had the first scoring chance in the fourth minute on a shot from the right wing off the foot of Kayla Nurnberger that was saved by
Kaitlyn Deister (St. Louis, Mo./Visitation Academy). The Hawks had another chance in the 27
th minute, but Natalie Kuhlenberg's shot was blocked.
S&T's (9-9-1) first chance came in the 28
th minute. The Lady Miners drew foul deep in Quincy territory and
Alex McCord (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View) sent the free kick towards goal but right to Megan Swanson who made the save.
The Hawks held a 2-1 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes while S&T had the lone corner kick.
The Lady Miners controlled play for the first 10 minutes of the second half getting four corner kicks and two shots. S&T's best chance to break the deadlock came in the 54
th as
Sabrina Hostler (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) was robbed of a goal by a great save by Swanson for a corner kick. Hostler had another chance in the 58
th minute but sailed her shot over the bar.
Quincy controlled most of the play over the final 25 minutes taking eight shots, but only got three of them on goal. Deister robbed Haylye Markway of a goal making a save on her header attempt in the 68
th minute. Markway had another chance nine minutes later, but once again Deister was up to the challenge making the save. The Hawks had another chance in the 81
st minute but Deister again rose to the occasion making a save on Ashley Burton's header attempt.
Quincy had a golden opportunity to win the game in the first overtime as Caroline Basser tried to head one in with 1:45 to play in the stanza, but the Lady Miner defense was able to clear it off the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Hawks had the only shot in the second overtime, but sent it wide right with 2:04 left to go in the period.
Quincy finished the game with a 14-4 edge in shots and put five of those on goal compared to two for S&T. The Hawks also had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks. Quincy was whistled for 12 fouls in the contest compared to six for the Lady Miners.
In the shootout the Hawks scored first as Taylor Wakeland beat Deister inside the right post.
Sammy Minea (Leawood, Kan./Blue Valley North ) had a chance to answer, but Swanson made the right read to make the save. Deister kept S&T in the shootout making a save on Burton's attempt to start the second round.
Morgan Henry (Camdenton, Mo./Camdenton) leveled the shootout with her goal beating Swanson to the upper right corner. Both sides made their next two attempts to keep it level.
Deister made her biggest save of the day guessing correctly on Markway's attempt and was able to keep it out of the goal. McCord then had a chance to win it and she did banging it off the crossbar and into the goal to send the Lady Miners into Sunday's final.
