S&T heads to Southern Indiana for opening round of GLVC Tournament

(Evansville, Ind.) – The Missouri S&T Lady Miners travel to Evansville, Ind., on Sunday afternoon to take on the University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles in the first round of the 2014 Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament at 1 p.m.  It's the eighth straight year that the Lady Miners will play in the conference tournament.

S&T, seeded 11th, looks to snap three-game losing streak and bounce back from its loss to Drury on Thursday in the home finale. The Lady Miners are averaging 68.2 points per contest and are led in scoring by Karli Sample (St. Joseph, Mo./Benton) with 13.7 per game. Toni Knar (Mundelein, Ill./Mundelein) and Kylie Cooper (Andover, Kan./Andover) are chipping in with 12.3 and 10.1 per contest respectively.

Southern Indiana, seeded sixth, has won four straight and seven of its last 10 heading into Sunday's game. The Screaming Eagles defeated Bellarmine 71-58 in their home finale on Thursday night behind 22 points and 12 rebounds from Anna Hackert. Mary O'Keefe added 15 points for USI as well.

The Screaming Eagles are one of the top scoring teams in the GLVC averaging 78.9 points per game while also allowing the third fewest in the league with 65.9 per contest. Hackert leads USI and is second in the GLVC in scoring and rebounding averaging 18.3 and 9.5 per contest. Stephanie Carpenter is the only other player in double figures with 14.3 per contest.

The game features two of the top three-point shooters in the league with Knar and Carpenter squaring off. Carpenter currently leads the GLVC in three-point field goals made per game (2.7) while Knar is second at 2.6.

This will be the second meeting of the year between the two schools with the Screaming Eagles winning the first one 91-62 back on January 9 in Evansville. Hackert finished with a game-high 28 points in that one and was joined in double figures by Carpenter with 16 points and Autumn Miller added 10. Knar led the Lady Miners with 17 points while Cooper and Senait McLeod (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.
