Miners rally, then prevail in PKs to advance to GLVC semifinals

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T rallied from a two-goal deficit with just over 22 minutes remaining in regulation time to extend its opening round game in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Sunday at Allgood-Bailey Stadium, then prevailed in an extended penalty kick shootout over Saint Joseph's to advance to the semifinals.

The game was tied 2-2 after regulation time and two overtime periods, sending the Miners into their first-ever penalty kick shootout to determine who would advance.  The shootout went into the sixth round, where David Murphy (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) scored for S&T and James Holloway (Cape Girardeau, Mo./Notre Dame Regional) turned away Angel Zamudio's attempt to give the Miners a 4-3 triumph.

Missouri S&T, the fourth seed in the tournament, will face top-seeded Rockhurst Friday in Kansas City, Mo., at 7:30 p.m.  The Hawks edged Southern Indiana 1-0 to move into the semifinals along with No. 2 seed Indianapolis and No. 3 seed Quincy, who will meet in the first semifinal contest.

The Miners (10-7-2) trailed 2-0 after a pair of Erick Turner goals, the first on a penalty kick in the 15th minute of play and then in the 65th minute when he hit a shot from the wing past Holloway.

S&T got one of the goals back within three minutes, as Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) sent a long pass that sprung Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) on a breakaway and he beat SJC goalkeeper Adam Whybrow to cut the lead in half.  The assist for Lawhead was his ninth of the season which broke the Miners' single season record.

Then with 4:20 left in the second half, Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) sent a ball to Maxi Fuchs (Munich, Germany), who took it down the sideline and took a bad angle shot that sailed over Whybrow's outstretched hand and just inside the far post to knot the score at two.

Both teams had golden opportunities to win the game in overtime.  About six minutes into the first period, Whybrow stopped a shot by Austin Parks (Rolla, Mo./Rolla) and the ball rolled free through the goal crease, but the Miners couldn't get to the ball before it was cleared.

In the second overtime session, Sebastian Quinteros got free in the box and got a shot away from point blank range, but Holloway turned that effort away.

Eduardo Abichabki (Sao Jose do Rio Pardo, Brazil/Colegio Unigrau) missed wide for the Miners to open the shootout, but Holloway stopped Alex Becker's attempt.  S&T went in front when Ryan Lawhead (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) converted his round two attempt before SJC's Jack Miller missed wide to keep the Miners in the lead.

The two sides traded goals in the next two rounds – with Andrade and Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) scoring for S&T and Gage Jensen and Peter Munro for the Pumas – before Mitch Morris (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) was turned away on a shot that would have ended the shootout.  Turner tied it for Saint Joseph's with a successful fifth round attempt.

Murphy put S&T back in front to start the sixth round, then Holloway went to his right to stop Zamudio's try to the lower left corner to give the Miners the decision.

The shootout was the 15th in the history of the men's GLVC Tournament and first since the 2011 semifinal contest between Quincy and Rockhurst.

S&T held a 23-10 advantage in shots in the game and had eight shots on goal to SJC's five.  Holloway turned away three shots in goal for the Miners.
