Miners rumble to Homecoming victory over Blue Tigers

ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T celebrated Homecoming Saturday by racking up 530 yards and reaching the end zone nine times on the offensive side of the ball, while holding Lincoln to just 276 yards and sacking the Blue Tiger quarterbacks 10 times on the way to a 65-16 win at Allgood-Bailey Stadium.

S&T jumped on top on its opening possession after getting the ball on a turnover on Lincoln's first possession.  The Blue Tigers drove from their own 19 into Miner territory, when LU quarterback Dennis Vinson completed a pass in the seam to C.J. Closser.  But as Closser got near the Miners' 10-yard line, he had the ball knocked out of his hands by Ryan Kirkendall (Silsbee, TX/Silsbee); Nate Brown (Webb City, MO/Webb City) recovered the fumble at the four to halt the drive.

The Miners gave Lincoln a heavy dose of Charles Bournes (Chicago, IL/Morgan Park) on the opening drive, as Bournes had five carries in the 10-play drive that included a 41-yard run to get the Miners into Lincoln territory.  S&T went to the air to reach the end zone, as Lamar Wilkes (Maryland Heights, MO/Pattonville) – who entered the game on a first-and-goal play – threw a four-yard scoring toss to defensive tackle Keyso Moss (Anderson, SC/T.J. Hanna) to put the Miners in the lead.

It was the first of five scoring passes for the Miner quarterbacks on Saturday, with the next scoring pass involving the two signalcallers as Tyler Swart (Dickinson, TX/Dickinson) – who had a hand in six touchdowns – completed a 26-yard touchdown toss to Wilkes right after S&T got the football after a 17-yard punt directly into a stiff wind blowing through the stadium.

Swart threw his second scoring pass of the day later in the opening quarter of 15 yards to Braxton Graham (Seneca, MO/Seneca).

Lincoln got on the scoreboard on its next possession when Vinson's pass went off the hands of a leaping Miner defender right to Chris Othelot, who took it to the end zone for a 74-yard touchdown reception.  Bo Brooks (Canutillo, TX/Canutillo) blocked the extra point to keep the score at 20-6 at the end of the first quarter.

The Miners broke the game open by scoring on three straight second quarter possessions, getting a 44-yard scoring pass from Swart to Graham, a one-yard touchdown run by Swart and a 39-yard field goal by Ben Styron before the Blue Tigers ended the half with a 50-yard field goal by Alex Templeton.

After allowing 148 yards to the Blue Tigers in the first half, the Miners held Lincoln to negative eight over the next 15 minutes as they had 345 yards of offense themselves by the intermission.

Swart scored another touchdown from the one in the third quarter and also threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game covering 13 yards to Ray Mullen (Palm Springs, CA/Palm Springs), while Deshawn Jones (Olympia Fields, IL/Rich Central) racked up the bulk of his career-high 136 yards on the ground in the second half, which included two long touchdown runs of 43 and 34 yards.

Jones' 136 yards, coupled with 85 from Bournes, were part of a 311-yard day on the ground for S&T.  It marked the first time in Tyler Fenwick's tenure as the Miners' head coach that S&T had ran for better than 300 yards in a game and the season-high 530 yards were the most for the Miners since they had 569 last September against Saint Joseph's.

The Miner defense also got to the Lincoln quarterbacks 10 times and had 17 tackles for lost yardage on the afternoon, led by the 2.5 apiece by defensive ends Bret Curtis (Lombard, IL/Glenbard South) and Sam Wallut (St. Charles, MO/Orchard Farm ).  Moss had two of the Miner sacks – 11 different players had a hand in at least one sack – while Kirkendall also had an interception to go along with the forced fumble that preceded S&T's first score.

The 65 points scored by S&T Saturday were the most ever posted by a Miner team in Allgood-Bailey Stadium since the facility opened in 1967 and the most by the Miners in a home game since 1923.

Missouri S&T heads to the road for the next two weeks, starting with next Saturday's 1 p.m. game against McKendree in Lebanon, Ill.  The Bearcats (4-3, 2-2 GLVC) used a late rally to down Saint Joseph's 20-16 Saturday.
