ROLLA, Mo. – A second half goal by Brett Langley sent Missouri S&T to defeat Sunday afternoon, as Indianapolis upended the second-seeded Miners
1-0 in the opening round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference men's soccer tournament.
The Miners, 10-3-6 on the year, will now have to wait to see if they will get a chance to continue their season in the NCAA Division II Tournament. S&T was third in the latest Midwest regional rankings, but had a loss to Drury earlier this year prior to Sunday's setback.
The NCAA will release its final weekly ranking on Wednesday, with the regional field scheduled to be announced on Nov. 7.
S&T had a couple of good scoring chances in the first half, including one in the opening seconds when
Felipe Andrade (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) hit a shot wide of the net. Later in the half,
Austin Parks (Rolla, MO/Rolla) just missed heading in a corner kick from
Unnar Ulfarsson (Gardabaer, Iceland/Fjolnir Reykjavik) that would have put the Miners in the lead.
The Miners outshot the Greyhounds (9-5-4) 8-7 in the first half.
Neither team had many opportunities to score in the first 25 minutes of the second half, until the Greyhounds made a push in S&T's end in the 70
th minute. After Mase Koki had a shot blocked by the defense, UIndy worked the ball around to Langley, who hit a shot from the top of the box that slipped past S&T goalkeeper
Aaron Hohenstein (St. Louis, MO/Lutheran South) into the lower left corner of the net.
S&T had four shots – one on net – following Langley's goal, but couldn't get one past Miles Palmer, who blanked the Miners for the second time this season with a four-save effort to send the Greyhounds into a semifinal date with Southern Indiana on Friday.
Hohenstein made three saves for S&T, who finished with a 14-11 advantage in shots.
