Olympic long jump results
RIO de JANIERO, Brazil – Tyrone Smith, a former All-America long jumper at Missouri S&T, finished in 16
th place Friday night in the qualifying round of the long jump at the Olympic Games.
The top 12 finishers in the qualifying round advanced to Saturday's final.
Smith was among the top 12 through the first two rounds. He recorded a jump of 25-6¼ (7.78 meters) in the opening round and was 11th at the conclusion of that set of jumps, then improved to 25-7½ (7.81 meters) on his second jump that was his best mark of the evening.
He rose to ninth after the second jump, but was back in 11
th prior to his third attempt, which covered 25-2 (7.67 meters). Smith was passed in the standings during the course of the third round.
At Missouri S&T, Smith won the Great Lakes Valley Conference championships in both the indoor and outdoor long jump in 2006 and again at the 2007 indoor meet where Smith repeated as the league's indoor triple jump champion. He finished as the NCAA Division II runner-up in the event twice during his Miner career.
Smith, who was inducted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference's Hall of Fame in 2014, was named as the regional field event "Athlete of the Year" by the NCAA for the 2006 indoor season for the Great Lakes region and was also selected as the GLVC's "Male Athlete of the Year" in that same season.
China's Jianan Wang had the best performance in Friday's competition with a leap of 27-0½ (8.24 meters). Jamaica's Damar Forbes grabbed the last qualifying spot at 7.85 meters, 0.04 ahead of Smith's best mark.
