Rolla, Mo. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball team used a three-point shooting barrage to defeat Missouri Valley 70-50 on Saturday afternoon at Billy Key Court. The Lady Miners (4-0) hit a season-high 11 three's in the victory. The 11 three's made were the most in a game since hitting 12 against McKendree on Feb. 5, 2015.
The game didn't start out well for either side as the two teams combined to make only seven field goals out of 30 attempts in the opening quarter. The Vikings (4-1) held an early four point lead but S&T hit 3 three's in the quarter the last by
Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) with 0:23 left in the quarter giving the Lady Miners an 11-10 lead at the end of the quarter.
Missouri Valley took its final lead of the game at 17-16 on a pair of free throws by Deanna Bugarinovic with 7:36 left before halftime. The Lady Miners then rattled off six straight to build a 22-17 advantage after a layup from
Ashley Harvey (Raytown, Mo./Raytown) about midway through the quarter. S&T pushed its lead to eight after the first of five three's from
Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) with 2:08 left in the half. The Vikings cut the deficit to 29-23 after a jumper from Hilma Mededovic with less than a minute to play in the half.
After shooting just 24 percent in the opening quarter the Lady Miners hit 7-of-14 shots in the second to finish the half shooting 35 percent from the floor.
S&T used a 13-4 run in the first seven minutes of the third quarter to extend its lead to 17 points after Arand's second three of the quarter. The Vikings though were able to cut the lead to 12 by the end of the quarter. Arand had 11 points in the frame,
Marta Durk (O'Fallon, Ill./O'Fallon Township) added three while Harvey and
Michelle Borgen (Tinley Park, Illinois/Andrew) had two points each.
Missouri Valley scored the first basket of the final quarter to cut the Lady Miner lead to 47-37 but S&T answered with seven straight points and never allowed the Vikings to get closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Borgen scored nine of her 11 points in the final quarter to reach double figures for the fourth straight game.
Arand finished with a game-high 21 points to lead three Lady Miners in double figures. Raley added 15 and Borgen added 11.
Kim Runge (Freedom, Wis./Freedom) pulled down 11 rebounds and
Jordan Kabetske (Republic, Mo./Republic) had seven assists and no turnovers.
S&T finished the game shooting a season-low 36 percent (25-for-69) from the field but did shoot 44 percent from beyond the arc. The Lady Miners struggled at the foul line making just 9-of-19 attempts. S&T was outrebounded by seven in the first half but doubled up Missouri Valley 30-15 on the glass in the final 20 minutes.
The Vikings were held to just 35 percent (19-for-54) shooting, just 3-of-17 from downtown and hit 60 percent of their free throw attempts. Mededovic and Veronika Petkova finished with 18 and 10 points respectively to lead Missouri Valley.
The Lady Miners are back in action next Friday taking on Union University (Tenn.) at 7:45 p.m. in the Ramada Oasis Convention Center/Drury Thanksgiving Classic at the O'Reilly Family Events Center.
