S&T falls to Sycamores in exhibition contest

Terre Haute, Ind. – Missouri S&T's women's basketball couldn't overcome a rough second quarter as it dropped its exhibition game at Indiana State 84-51 at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Ind., on Tuesday. Maddie Raley (Haubstadt, Ind./Gibson Southern) led S&T (4-2) and Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) led S&T with 11 points each while Michelle Borgen (Tinley Park, Illinois/Andrew) and Janie Arand (Washington, Mo./St. Francis Borgia) added eight points apiece.

Raley put the Lady Miners on top less than a minute into the game hitting a three-pointer in the left corner to open the scoring but the Sycamores (2-4) responded with eight straight taking advantage of three S&T turnovers. The Lady Miners trimmed the deficit to 8-5 but were unable to get closer than three the rest of the quarter. Borgen had a chance late in the quarter to make it 20-17 but missed the back end of a three-point play.

Indiana State took advantage scoring the final five points of the quarter and then opened the second quarter scoring the first 13 points to extend its lead to 38-16 on a fast break lay-up by Ashli O'Neal. Raley quieted the run momentarily hitting a runner in the lane but the Sycamores responded with another 10 in a row to lead 48-18 after a jumper AJ Thomas with 1:49 left in the half.

After shooting 41 percent from the floor in the opening quarter, S&T made only 2-of-12 field goal attempts in the second quarter while Indiana State hit 10-of-16 shots and were 4-for-7 from downtown.

The Lady Miners outscored the Sycamores 18-15 in the third quarter with a majority of those points coming from the foul line. S&T was 12-for-12 at the charity stripe led by Joe'l Bland (St. Charles, Mo./Homeschooled) who went 6-of-6 at the line and scored eight of her 11 points in the frame.

S&T used a 12-3 run over a six-minute stretch spanning the third and fourth quarters to cut the deficit to 68-42 after a layup by Bland with 7:06 to play in the game. The Sycamores closed out the game outscoring the Lady Miners 16-9 over the final seven minutes to take the victory.
