KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A stunning three-point shooting performance by Truman State ended Missouri S&T's hopes of making a run in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament, as the Bulldogs used 18 three-point baskets to down the Miners
102-83 in an opening round contest Sunday at Pershing Arena.
The loss ended the season for the 11
th-seeded Miners as S&T finished with a record of 12-14.
Truman, who entered the game as the fourth-ranked three-point shooting team in NCAA Division II, made its 18 treys in 30 tries, with much of the damage being done by Cory Myers as he went eight-of-10 from long range and scored a career-high 30 points in the win. It was Myers who got the ball rolling for the Bulldogs in the first half when he rattled off 11 straight points – including three-pointers on three consecutive possessions – to give the Bulldogs a 21-12 after a little over five minutes had been played.
The Miners also shot the ball well at the outset of the contest and closed to within four at 24-20 when
Jalen Myers (Shorewood, IL/Minooka) hit his third three-pointer of the opening half at the 12:38 mark. However, S&T began to go cold from the field and the Bulldogs outscored the Miners 21-6 over the next eight minutes to go up by 19 with four minutes left in the half.
S&T closed the margin to 14 right before the half ended when Myers closed a 15-point period with a baseline jumper, but the Bulldogs answered back quickly prior to the buzzer when Connor Erickson scored to give Truman a 52-36 lead at the intermission.
The Bulldogs hit eight three-pointers in the first half and didn't slow down after the intermission, connecting on 10-of-15 from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes. Truman used the three-point shot to build its advantage to as much as 25 in the second half.
Missouri S&T, who knocked off Truman in Kirksville a month ago, shot 53.3 percent in the second half and just under 47 percent for the game, with
Randy Holmes (St. Louis, MO/Soldan International Studies) leading the way with 18 points. Myers finished the contest with 17 and
Juwan Miller (Kitchener, Ont./Huron Heights) added 15 points and nine assists, finishing the year with 145 that is the second-most in a season in school history.
Myers' three treys in the game allowed him to end the year with 73, which also put him among the top 10 in a single year in S&T history. Holmes also had nine rebounds as the Miners outrebounded Truman 35-34.
The Bulldogs (21-8) had four others in double figures besides Myers, with Jake Velky scoring 19 points and Kyle Kanaskie 15 to earn a quarterfinal date Thursday with Southern Indiana.
