ROLLA, Mo. – Three members of Missouri S&T's swimming team have been selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America's academic all-district team for the 2016-17 season.
The three selections – seniors
Jon Glaser (Wildwood, MO/Lafayette) and
Miguel Chavez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Colegio de Bachilleres) and junior
Stuart Mossop (Houston, TX/James E. Taylor) – were named in the at-large category, which covers all sports that do not have a specific team for it and all three will be eligible for Academic All-America honors.
Glaser, the Great Lakes Valley Conference swimmer of the year for the 2016-17 season, captured conference titles in the 50-, 100- and 200-yard freestyle events as well as anchoring the 800-yard freestyle relay team to a first place finish. At the NCAA Division II Championships, he won seven All-America awards, which included a fourth place finish in the 200-yard freestyle, seventh in the 100-yard freestyle and fifth place showing as part of the Miners' 800-yard freestyle relay.
He won at least two GLVC titles in each of his four seasons at Missouri S&T and won league championships in seven different events during his career. Earlier this month, Glaser – a mechanical engineering major at S&T and a two-time academic all-district selection -- was selected as the winner of the men's Gale Bullman Award, which is given to the top senior student-athlete for the year.
Chavez was the GLVC champion in the the 100- and 200-breaststroke in each of the last two seasons – he won the 200-breaststroke three straight times and had the fourth-best time in the country in the 200-breaststroke this season going into the national meet of 1:56.11.
Chavez, who earned All-America honors at this year's national meet and won the consolation final of the 200-yard breaststroke in the process, finished his S&T career as the holder of the school record in both breaststroke events. He is majoring in mechanical engineering at Missouri S&T and was a third-team Academic All-America selection last season.
Mossop scored for the Miners in five events at the GLVC Championships, where S&T finished second as a team at the meet. Mossop posted scoring performances in the 100-yard backstroke, both individual medley events and as part of both medley relay teams at the 2017 conference meet. In addition to his work in the pool and classroom, where he is a chemical engineering major, Mossop also served as the president of Missouri S&T's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee during the last academic year.
